Seminar dedicated to intellectual property law, on the theme ORIGINALITY

Today, 10 November 2025, the seminar dedicated to intellectual property law, entitled “Originality as a Condition for Copyright Protection: Theoretical and Case-Law Perspectives,” took place. The event was organized by the Working Group on Intellectual Property Issues within the Public Ministry (GLPPI), in collaboration with the National Institute of Magistracy (INM).

The event brought together judges, prosecutors, lawyers, university professors, and intellectual property specialists in a dynamic and engaging setting, at times made particularly lively by the openness and humor of the speakers. Despite the animated atmosphere, the academic level consistently remained at the highest standards, supported by distinguished national and international experts. This combination once again highlighted the strength of the communication bridges built over time among legal professionals in the field of intellectual property in Romania. In this context, we consider this year’s seminar to have been the most successful in the entire series organized in previous years.

The success of the event was the result of a collective effort; however, it is worth mentioning—discreetly yet necessarily—the role of our colleague, Attorney Gabriel Turcu, who continued the tradition of these seminars by rigorously coordinating all the actors and entities involved, ensuring a coherent agenda and exemplary organization. Gabriel Turcu also moderated the first discussion panel, dedicated to the scope of defining originality and its protection.

During the sessions, substantive presentations were delivered by Romanian and international experts, including:

  • Octavia Spineanu-Matei (CJEU) – reflections on the originality of works in the era of artificial intelligence
  • Eleonora Rosati (Stockholm University) – “Infringement Test, Originality or Recognizability”
  • Liviu Zidaru, Răzvan Dincă, Paul Buta – debates on determining originality and copyright infringement
  • Magda Irimia (Popescu), Adrian Dinescu, Ana-Maria Baciu – discussions on AI-generated works and the challenges of establishing originality
  • Elisabeta Florescu, Răzvan Bonta, Vladimir Diaconiță – the limits of copyright protection

The seminar provided a solid framework for theoretical, case-law, and practical analysis, contributing to the strengthening of interprofessional dialogue in the field of copyright and intellectual property protection.

We extend our thanks to all participants, moderators, and speakers for their contributions to a day rich in ideas, reflections, and valuable perspectives.
